A new Danish study of labouring women found…

  • 80% of time was spent in “sacrum non-flexible positions” during the last 24 hours before childbirth.
  • Over 90% of women gave birth in “sacrum non-flexible positions.”

Sacrum non-flexible positions are birthing positions that put weight on the sacrum and restrict the movement of the coccyx.

Examples of non-flexible sacrum positions:

  • Lying on your back
  • Semi-recumbent (lying back but with upper body elevated)
  • Lithotomy (lying back with knees bent, raised above hips)
  • Sitting in bed

The rest of this article covers key statistics from this study and why this is important….

The study was published by Kjeldsen LL et al., Sex Reprod Healthc. 2025.
