New Study: In Spain, home births with a midwife “offered better obstetric and neonatal outcomes” than hospital births

A new Spanish study not only suggests that home birth with a midwife is a safe viable option for low risk women…

But also that home birth offered “better obstetric and neonatal outcomes”.

The study is particularly interesting because in Spain, planned home births are led by midwives, who mostly function independent of the healthcare system…. See my Take-Home Message for why this matters!

The Study:

The observational cross-sectional study compared planned home births to planned hospital births in Catalonia, Spain.

Researchers looked at data from 3,463 low-risk births between 2016 and 2018, including 2,713 hospital and 750 home births.

Study Results:

Spontaneous vaginal birth:

  • Planned hospital births (83 %)
  • Planned home births (92.7 %)
