A new study from researchers from South Australia finds breastfeeding for at least 6 months decreases the mother’s risk of cardiovascular and metabolic issues for up to 3 years.
The benefits are especially impactful for mothers who experienced pregnancy complications.
The study found if women had at least one pregnancy complication, if the mother breastfed for at least six months after birth, they had significantly lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol and lower blood sugar levels in comparison to those who did not breastfeed for six months.
The study’s senior author is Claire Roberts, who leads a pregnancy research group at Flinders University in Australia. To quote Dr Roberts from a news release about the study:
“That means that breastfeeding improves women’s cardio metabolic risk factors, which is good news for new mothers who might be at risk of developing future cardiovascular and metabolic diseases”
The study was published in July 19th 2023 in the International Breastfeeding Journal by researchers from the University of Adelaide and Flinders University.
