In his recent paper, neuroscientist Dr Nils Bergman presents a powerful “oxytocin-based perspective” for maternity care.

Dr Bergman makes a case that the current paradigm of routinely separating mother and babies could be putting newborns at “increased risk for morbidity and mortality”.

A New Normal?

Dr Bergman argues that instead of the current system, there could be a new “normal”, or more accurately, a case for restoring the original paradigm.

The author presents arguments and ethical perspectives for a new perspective on what is “normal,” keeping newborns with their mothers is the infant’s physiological expectation and critical requirement for healthy development.

Dr Bergman argues that this would mean a better understanding of the science of oxytocin, faciliated by the concept of nurture.
