How long does it take for essential connections to be made in a newborn baby’s brain? How long does it take for a mother’s brain to be rewired? What about the father’s brain?

These important questions are answered by neuroscientist Dr Nils Bergman, MD — he is one of the speakers at our MICROBIRTH SUMMIT.

Find out more about the science of human milk, birth, neuroscience and the microbiome.

The fundamentals of neonatal neuroscience…

A baby is born with approximately 100 billion brain cells, or neurons.

But at birth, few connections, or synapses, exist between these billions of brain cells.

In other words, a baby is born with brain wiring not fully connected.

The neurons need to quickly connect up and the right type of neural pathways need to form.

What helps makes those brain connections happen FAST is a parent’s love, affection and closeness. In other words, a baby needs to feel safe.

During our international The Microbirth Plan conference — Dr Nils Bergman, MD and neuroscientist, gave a 30 minute masterclass on perinatal neuroscience in a presentation called “Nurturescience and Zero Separation”

In his jaw-dropping presentation, Dr Bergman describes the most effective way for a baby to feel safe in order for those neuro-connections to be quickly made.

It is for a baby to be held continuously in uninterrupted skin-to-skin on the parent’s naked chest for extended periods of time.

This blog-article covers a few key points from his masterclass…. but if you are a doula, childbirth educator, nurse, midwife or clinician…. I do urge you to watch the whole presentation.

It will make you see the urgent need for maternity systems to fully respect the physiology of pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding, and to take into account the fundamentals of neuroscience for the long-term well-being of all…
